Psychiatrists go to medical school to earn their MD degree. After that they attend more classes to get a specialty and narrow down their field of practice. They can specialize in adult, child, addiction, forensic, organizational, geriatric etc. fields. Adult, child and geriatric psychiatrists target different age groups. Addiction psychiatrists treat people with addictions or issues with substance abuse. Organizational psychiatrists assist in issues on the workplace and forensic psychiatrists assist in the law enforcement fields. All psychiatrists are allowed to prescribe and use medications in their practice. The average salary for these specialists is about $160,000.

Psychologists attend educational facilities to earn their Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology. They study people's behavior and minf functioning. As they are not MDs, they are not allowed to prescribe medications. Psychologists can specialize in different fields, some of which involve health care work and some are more research oriented. School, clinical and counseling psychologists are the ones who work directly with patients and help them through therapy. Academic ones work in colleges and universities teaching or conducting resaearches. The average salary is about $65,000.
